Bobcats falter against Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Texas State’s return to San Marcos ended with a thud as the Bobcats fell to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders 7-2.

The loss drops Texas State’s record to 27-18 as the Bobcats are now suddenly in danger of missing out on an at-large NCAA tournament bid with their RPI now dropping below the top 40.

“We just didn’t show up to play and that’s on me,” Head Coach Steven Trout said. “We didn’t play good tonight. Really horrific on offense, didn’t take care of the baseball, just didn’t play well.”

The Bobcats scored first when senior Rashawn Galloway connected with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Islanders answered back in the top of the third.

A&M Corpus scored on a two-run RBI double before hitting a two-run home run to go up 4-1 over the Bobcats.

In the top of the seventh, the Islanders scored again on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead before the Bobcats could answer in the bottom of the eighth.

With the bases loaded and one out, junior Jaquae Stewart hit into a fielder’s choice to score senior Rashawn Galloway, making it a 5-2 game. The Bobcats looked to add more runs with runners on the corners and two outs, but the Islanders ended the at-bat on a fly out.

A&M Corpus later added two more runs in the top of the ninth as a Bobcat error allowed the Islanders to extend the lead to 7-2.

Texas State was unable to do anything in their final at-bat as the Bobcats hit into both an infield fly then a double play to end the game.

The Bobcat offensive struggles have continued to plague the team, which hasn’t scored more than four runs in eight of their last nine games.

“Just not on time, trying to do too much on long swings,” Trout said. “We faced some good arms as well, but tonight was just long swings, both sides swings, upfield swings, you know, a lot of weak fly balls, and a lot of weak grounders, which means you’re trying to pull everything. So you have to get in the middle field and hit line drives which we’ll go to work on tomorrow.”

CONFERENCE SERIES PREVIEW It’s do or die for the Bobcats heading into their weekend conference series as Texas State looks to keep their NCAA Tournament At-Large bid alive against the South Alabama Jaguars.

The Jaguars enter the series with a 26-18 overall record coming off a series loss to Southern Miss last weekend.

South Alabama’s offense comes in averaging 6.68 runs per game and a team batting average of .286, against a Texas State pitching staff with a team ERA of 5.46.

South Alabama pitching enters the series with a team ERA of 4.90 going up against a Bobcat offense averaging 7.16 runs per game and a team batting average of .279.

First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Irvine-Rasmussen Ballpark
