Texas State won their opening game against App State, defeating the Mountaineers 4-2 for the start of the three-game conference series.

The Bobcats improve to 35-18 overall while App State falls to 28-20.

Following two scoreless innings, App State struck first in the bottom of the third, scoring on an RBI single up the middle to lead 1-0.

But App State’s lead didn’t last long.

In the top of the fourth, junior Katarina Zarate tied the game on a solo home run to left field to make it a 1-1 game.

Later, senior Sami Hood connected with a two-run RBI double to put Texas State up 3-1 over App State.

Senior Karmyn Bass extended the lead for the Bobcats, hitting an RBI double of her own in the top of the seventh, making it a 4-1 lead.

Despite App State scoring in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout, Texas State shut the door on the Mountaineer comeback to seal the win at 4-2.

Junior pitcher Madison Azua earned her 24th win of the season, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, no walks and striking out 10 batters.

The Bobcats will wrap up their final Sun Belt conference series against App State later this weekend before preparing for the conference tournament.
