Trout wins 200th career game
The Bobcats snapped their four-game losing streak to beat the Baylor Bears 9-6 as Head Coach Steven Trout won his 200th career game as Head Coach.
Texas State improves to 28-21 for the season while Baylor falls to 2523.
“We were down forever and we finally got it done,” Trout said. “We love to do these things at home, in front of the home crowd and against a really good opponent. But to me, it’s about the players, coaches, and all of the above. I get the win but those guys put in the time and effort to make it happen.”
The Bobcats struck first with junior outfielder Bennett Fryman hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to put Texas State up 2-0 over the Bears.
Later in the third, senior outfielder Rashawn Galloway hit his 10th home run of the season before senior Chase Mora hit an RBI double in the fourth inning to make it a 4-0 lead.
Baylor put their first runs of the game in the fifth inning with a solo home run. But the homer was immediately answered with a Bobcat home run as junior first baseman Jaquae Stewart crushed a solo bomb off the batter’s eye in center to make it a 5-1 lead.
The Bears came roaring back in the 6th inning, scoring on an RBI single then an RBI groundout, making it a two-score game at 5-3.
Once again the Bobcats answered Baylor’s runs in the bottom of the sixth when junior Justin Vossos scored on a wild pitch before a two-run double by Galloway pushed the Texas State lead to 8-3.
Mora added to Texas State’s lead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double as the Bobcats entered the ninth inning up 9-3.
But the Bears did not go away. Baylor scored on an RBI double down the first base line before scoring again on a wild pitch to shrink the Bobcat lead. Baylor added another run on an RBI single as Texas State’s lead was shrunk to 9-6.
Senior closer Kyle Froehlich slammed the door on any Baylor comeback, striking out the final two batters for the last outs to seal the Bobcat win.
The Bobcats jump back in conference play this weekend for their final road conference series against the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
The Red Wolves enter the weekend with a 2819 overall record and an 11-13 conference record following their conference series loss to Old Dominion.
First pitch for Game 1 is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Arkansas State.
