Trash truck with blown tires leads officers on I-35 chase

A pursuit that began in New Braunfels Wednesday morning ended in Austin with one suspect in custody after six vehicles were struck and four people injured.

The incident began when a Comal County Sheriff’s Office deputy received a report of a reckless driver operating a trash truck in the 17000 block of FM 306. The caller reported the driver may have been intoxicated, according to a Comal County press release.

When a deputy located the truck and attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to stop, ran a red light and struck another vehicle. Stop sticks were deployed, successfully deflating both front and rear left tires. The suspect struck a second vehicle before jumping a curb and entering the IH 35 frontage road heading northbound.

The pursuit continued onto IH-35 proper, with the truck traveling on two confirmed flat front tires. The driver passed Center Point Road in San Marcos, the McCarty Lane exit and the Seguin exit before the rear left tire also deflated. The driver briefly exited at the 213 mile marker before returning to IH 35.

During the pursuit, the driver attempted to push a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper off the roadway. The pursuit ended when the truck struck a wall in Austin. The driver fled on foot, was pursued and taken into custody without further incident.

Devante Dunn was arrested and charged with the following: Evading Arrest with a Vehicle, Evading Arrest on Foot, Aggravated Assault (4 counts), Collision Involving Injury (4 counts), Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While License Invalid.

Seven Comal County Sheriff’s Office deputies were involved in the pursuit. The Comal County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the New Braunfels Police Department, San Marcos Police Department, Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Kyle Police Department, Austin Police Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The investigation remains ongoing.
