The San Marcos Fire Department is gearing up for its ninth Citizens Fire Academy this fall. The free hands-on academy will be held from Aug. 12 through Nov. 4.
During the 12-week course, students will see how firefighters perform swift water rescues and rope rescues, attend fire extinguisher training, learn about ground operations, fire safety as a whole, receive a full overview of the department and become CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certified. Classes will also cover information regarding personal protective gear, ground ladders and aerial operations, pump operations, vehicle extrication, hazardous materials and live fire training with full protective gear and breathing apparatus.
To register you must be a resident or work in San Marcos. The class is free, but is limited to only 15 cadets. The application deadline is Aug. 8. Full information on the application process, and a schedule of the classes can be found online.
