Hillsboro man dies in motorcycle accident

A man died Friday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident, officials said.

Emergency personnel responded to a traffic accident on North Interstate 35 around 4:10 p.m. on Friday near Wonder World Drive Exit 202, according to the City of San Marcos.

Martel Tamar Sanders, 41 of Hillsboro, was driving a black 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle in the left lane of northbound I-35. Traffic slowed down in front of Sanders and he rear-ended a vehicle ahead of him, which caused his motorcycle to fall to the ground. Sanders was thrown to the ground and into moving traffic, officials said.

Witnesses at the scene, including an off-duty firefighter and a medical student, performed CPR on Sanders, who was later transported to Ascension Seton Medical Center Hays in Kyle. Sanders was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Beth Smith. Next of kin was notified.

“We urge motorists to drive defensively, to not follow too closely and to always watch for potential dangers before it’s too late to react,” said Brandon Winkenwerder, San Marcos Assistant Police Chief. “Traffic conditions can change quickly with tragic results. We extend our condolences to Mr. Sanders’ family.”

Friday’s incident marks the sixth traffic fatality in San Marcos in 2019.
