SMCISD Board of Trustees to discuss tax rate

Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that the San Marcos CISD is decreasing the tax rate by $0.10 from last year's rate. Property owners' will, however, pay more in taxes due to property value increase.

The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees will discuss the tax rate at Monday’s regular meeting.

The board of trustees will vote to adopt a new tax rate of $1.31 per $100 valuation for the District. Although the tax rate last year was $1.41, the district says this year’s rate is a 2.25 percent increase.

According to information provided by SMCISD, $0.99 of the $1.31 tax rate is designated for maintenance and operations, while $0.39 is designated for the payment of principal and interest bonded indebtedness.

The trustees will also take action on the effective tax rate and rollback tax rate. The effective tax rate is set to be $1.28, while the rollback tax rate will be $1.31 if approved by the board.

In other business, the trustees consider acceptance of the Certified Appraisal Rolls for the SMCISD. The trustees will consider approval of budget amendments. The amendments includes increases to child nutrition services, student transportation, extracurricular activities and maintenance.

The board is set to consider approval of the 2019-2020 Student Code of Conduct. The trustees will take action on a board policy update. They will also consider approving Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System appraisers.

The board will also consider approving stipend change for 2019-2020, which is estimated to save the district $3,100.

The trustees will also consider approval of a donation from the City of San Marcos for 75 mobile radios, which are slated to be used in case of emergencies.

The board will also discuss the possible creation and membership of a budget advisory committee.

The trustees will also consider action on the following items after closed session: consideration of a guaranteed maximum price amendment with Cadence McShane Construction Company LLC for the Middle Miller School Addition and Renovation Project; consideration of the district’s construction manager at Risk contract with Cadence McShane Construction Company LLC; Consideration to select the construction delivery method for Miller Middle School Addition and Renovation Project; consideration to select construction delivery method for DeZavala Elementary School, Goodnight Middle School and Miller Middle School; consider authorizing acquisition of property/real estate with intent of relocating Crossroads Program; consider approval of San Marcos High School Assistant Principal.

The board meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at San Marcos High School — 2601 Rattler Rd — inside the Criminal Justice Classroom.
