Labor Day Sales & Deals

Labor Day 2019 lands on Monday, Sept. 2 this year, making it not just the last summer holiday you can celebrate, but also one of the best times of the year to shop.

Labor Day was originally organized as a celebration of various labor unions’ contributions to the U.S. economy, but it has since become more of a buying holiday for consumers than anything else.  Many retailers mark down their inventory considerably during the holiday, which is why many parents hold off until then to do their children’s back-to-school shopping. You’re likely to find deep discounts on just about everything, from clothes and electronics to furniture and appliances.

WalletHub, a personal finance website, tracked various product categories to see which among them are discounted most heavily in September compared with the rest of the year. The standouts this year, according to the report, are:

  • Apparel & Accessories. Last year, 45 percent of all Labor Day sales were for clothes, as retailers cleared out their summer stock to make shelf space for fall and winter styles. Shoppers can expect to save anywhere from 20 to 80 percent when they buy clothes online. However, the higher the discount, the more likely a summer sale will be limited to a few select items.
  • Appliances. Major household appliances are usually a big purchase, but shoppers can expect most retailers to offer an appliance sale that takes up to 40 percent off large appliances this Labor Day. That makes it a good opportunity to buy a new washer, dryer, fridge, oven, or dishwasher.
  • Computers & Phones. The HP, Lenovo, and Dell Labor Day sales have already arrived and retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club are currently offering some fairly substantial discounts on Apple tech.
  • Electronics. From TVs to printers and Bluetooth speakers, Amazon and Walmart have some noteworthy discounts.

While the best Labor Day sales have traditionally been on mattresses, clothing, and outdoor gear, shoppers can expect deals on just about everything this year — thanks to Walmart and Amazon.
