Family and friends of Tomas Cuevas Jr. helped dedicate San Marcos High School’s cafeteria in his honor.
Sara Garza Rountree, Cuevas' granddaughter, and Zulema Cuevas pulled down a banner Monday night revealing a steel sign naming the cafeteria the Tomas Cuevas Jr. Dining Hall
“I speak on behalf of my Cuevas family when I say thank you to the members of the school board of San Marcos CISD and to the community within and beyond San Marcos, and to Lupe Costilla and Roland Saucedo for pushing this through to honor my grandpa,” Rountree said during Monday’s dedication ceremony.
“My grandfather would be humbled by this honor, if he were here with us today,” Rountree said. “When you hear the name, Tomas Cuevas, I'm sure a memory comes to mind of a time he did something for you, for family or friends, or for the school or nonprofit organizations. He lived God's word — loving first and being the hands and feet of Christ — doing for his community with a humble heart. Helping feed children was important to my grandpa, and having this cafeteria in his name, where children are fed is an amazing honor to his memory.”

The San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees unanimously voted during Feb. 18’s regular meeting to name the high school’s cafeteria after Tomas Cuevas Jr.
“I was really proud that we got this opportunity to name the cafeteria after Mr. Cuevas,” SMCISD Board of Trustees President John McGlothlin said Monday. “Stories that we were told through the community and through everyone that he had an impact on just really convinced me that he was worthy of this designation and that it’ll be great to see here in the cafeteria.
“(SMCISD Director of Child Nutrition Mike) Boone told me stories about him stepping up and helping to provide fruit and fresh stuff for the kids almost anytime he asked. And then I heard other stories throughout the community about his service to the community and his dedication to it.”
SMCISD presented a plaque to the Cuevas family before unveiling the sign in the cafeteria.
“Tomas Cuevas Jr. Dining Hall dedicated September 16, 2019 in recognition of Tomas Cuevas Jr. for his service to San Marcos CISD students, staff and community,” the plaque reads. “Mr. Cuevas Jr., a self-taught businessman and entrepreneur was a man of the community who was always ready to help and provide produce to San Marcos CISD families. A man of incredible kindness.”
