Motorcycle driver dies in head-on collision

A man died in a motorcycle accident in San Marcos early Friday morning.

Brandon Heath Gutierrez, 37, died in a crash near the 300 block of West Hopkins St. at approximately 12:02 a.m., officials said

According to an initial investigation conducted by the San Marcos Police Department, Gutierrez was driving his 2008 Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle toward the square on West Hopkins. Police said Gutierrez appeared to have traveled into the oncoming traffic lane and lost control of his motorcycle due to excessive speed. Gutierrez hit the front end of a 2017 Nissan Versa that was traveling away from the Square at the time of the collision, officials said.

The driver of the Versa remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. No criminal charges are expected at this time.

Gutierrez, a New Braunfels resident, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace JoAnne Prado. Next of kin was notified.

Friday morning’s collision is the eighth traffic fatality for SMPD in 2019. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
