Library presentation to discuss cost of cannabis enforcement in San Marcos, Hays County

A presentation at the San Marcos Public Library on Thursday will discuss the human cost and financial implications of Hays County's marijuna policies.

Since 2013, possession of marijuana has been the number one cause of arrest in Hays County, while neighboring Texas counties decline prosecution or issue tickets.

Panelists Joe Ptak and Joe Gaddy will share their recollections of the early 90s marijuana activism of the "San Marcos 7."

In 1991, nine residents smoked marijuana cigarettes in Hays County Sheriff's Office in civil disobedience; a local businessman was arrested at the state comptroller's office trying to buy a tax stamp for his cannabis; and jailed protestors engaged in lengthy hunger strikes.

Thursday's event begins at 7:30 p.m. at 625 E. Hopkins St. and is presented by local activist organization, Mano Amiga.
