San Marcos Art League opens new gallery downtown

The new San Marcos Art Center, a venture of the San Marcos Art League, will officially open its doors on Thursday, Oct. 17. Located at 117 N. Guadalupe, Suite 101, the grand opening celebration will take place from 6-9 p.m. All are invited to help celebrate this important new center for the arts.

The Art Center kicks off its opening with an exhibit by internationally known artist and teacher Billy Ray Mangham. Mangham has been working in clay since 1972. He is one of the founders of Texas Clay Festival and is currently the director of the Eye of the Dog Art Center. His work is included in many collections including Delbert McClinton, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Dee and Terry Buck, Carl W. Block, John and Darlene Williams, The Blanton Museum, The Wittliff Collection at Texas State University, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, and the Contemporary in Austin. He holds a B.A. in Ceramics from San Jose State University in San Jose, California, a M.A. and M.F.A. in Sculpture from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

The San Marcos Art Center will showcase fine and functional art created by members of the San Marcos Art League. In addition to its role as a gallery, the center will be a multi-purpose establishment, offering workshops and art demonstrations, artist receptions, youth art activities, and meeting space. The Center also houses two artist studios where independent artists can be seen creating their works.
