U.S. Navy Veteran selected as Grand Marshal for Veteran’s Day Parade

U.S. Navy Veteran Richard Zeni was named this year’s Veterans Day Parade Grand Marshal, the city announced Wednesday. 

This year’s Veterans Day parade will take place on Nov. 9 in downtown San Marcos. 

Zeni served in the Navy from March 1943 to July 1984, which included tours in World War II, Vietnam War and Korean War. He was awarded the Aircrew Insignia, American Theater Medal and Victory Medal during his service. 

Zeni transitioned into the Navy-Reserve Unit after his time on active duty. He served 28 years as an Aviation Antisubmarine Warfare Technician Chief during his time in the reserve unit.

Zeni worked as a substitute teacher, member of the bus committee, and was a member of the “original seven” of Butler Manufacturing following his retirement.

Parade registration ends today 

Veterans Day Parade applications are due today. Applications can be found on the city's website

The City of San Marcos, in collaboration with the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and local veterans organizations, is seeking participants for the “Honoring All Who Served”-themed parade.  

The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will travel through downtown San Marcos. A free biscuit and gravy breakfast will be served before the parade at 8:30 a.m. on the lawn of the Historic Hays County Courthouse — 111 E. San Antonio St. 

Veterans groups, military organizations, civic clubs, bands, drill teams, public officials, equestrians, youth teams, classic vehicles and others are invited to join the Veterans Day Parade procession. There is no fee to participate.
