Kiwanis invites kids to join Bicycle Brigade at annual Veterans Day Parade

Since 2007, the Kiwanis Club of San Marcos has participated in the Veterans Day Parade.  Members decorate a float that is pulled by an antique John Deere tractor.  Other members make sure that the downtown San Marcos square is decorated with United States Flags.  Then all the members meet on the courthouse lawn and assist kids and their parents in decorating their bicycles and scooters.

Kids, ages f5 and older, can show their support for veterans by decorating and riding their bikes in the in the parade. The Kiwanis Club Kids Bicycle Brigade will enter midway through the parade on Saturday, Nov. 9,. Children can bring their bikes and helmets to the courthouse lawn and decorate their bikes from 9-10 a.m., with free flags, streamers, and sign materials before the Kiwanis Club members escort them into the parade, which begins at 10 a.m.. Bicycles with training wheels, and scooters are welcome.  All kids that participate in the Bicycle Brigade will be entered into a drawing to win bicycles, courtesy of Academy Sports and Outdoors.  For many years, Academy has partnered with Kiwanis Club to give away boys and girls bicycles and helmets.

The Veterans Day Parade is especially important to members of the San Marcos Kiwanis Club, since more than one-fourth of our members are veterans. Many of our club members will be wearing T-shirts commemorating November 11, Veterans Day.

The Kiwanis club meets every Thursday at noon at Grins Restaurant. If you would like to learn more about the organization, contact any member. We are always looking for community spirited folks that would like to join us as we serve our community’s youth in many ways.
