League to celebrate 100 years of womens’ right to vote

The Hays County League of Women Voters will be celebrating the 100 years since women gained the right to vote this weekend at their Suffrage Centennial Celebration.

On Saturday, Nov. 9 from 2-5 p.m., the League of Women Voters will hold a program at The Wimberley Playhouse, 50 Old Kyle Rd.

The program will include a screening of "Iron Jawed Angels," a film about suffragettes and suffragists, as well as brief readings, according to a press release from the organization.

“The so-called ‘Iron Jawed Angels’ were a group of passionate and dynamic young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women’s right to vote,” stated a press release. “Other notable women who take a far more conventional approach, including Carrie Chapman Catt (brilliantly played by Anjelica Huston), take part in the ultimately successful struggle for women’s right to vote.”

Attendees are invited to attend the program dressed in WWI era attire.

To purchase tickets, visit The Wimberley Players' website. Tickets can also be ordered by phone by calling the box office at 512-847-0575.
