Maxfield Baker and Saul Gonzales have officially been sworn onto the San Marcos City Council.
On Monday evening, the San Marcos City Council held a special meeting to canvass election returns for the November 2019 election, administer the Oath of Office to Place 1 and Place 2 councilmembers, and select a new Mayor Pro-Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem.
Council voted unanimously to canvass the election results for San Marcos City Council Place 1 and Place 2. For Place 1, Baker — former Planning and Zoning Commissioner — received 1,929 votes, or 50.4% of the total votes. For Place 2, incumbent Gonzales received 2,274 votes, or 59.57% of total votes.
Baker will replace Lisa Prewitt on the dais. Prewitt, who served as a councilmember in San Marcos for six years, was presented with a glass plaque by Mayor Jane Hughson during Monday’s meeting.
“I have been so proud to call you my friend and my colleague,” Hughson said to Prewitt. “Friend longer than six years, colleague for six. And in your six years of service you have provided great value to our city, to our residents, our constituents, to everyone, visitors all alike.”
Prewitt thanked her colleagues, community and city staff for all of the work “we have accomplished collectively to create a safer and stronger community.”
“I am hopeful that future councils will find value in the work that we have all accomplished together as a council and a community and that this work provides a very strong foundation for the future generations of our community,” Prewitt said. “From flood mitigation, river, environmental protection, future housing, job growth, mobility options, no kill initiatives for our animals, criminal justice reform and so much more our community is blessed to have some of the smartest most creative and caring people I know with very diverse perspectives.”
Hughson issued a certificate of election to Baker before Richard Garcia, an old friend of Baker’s, administered his oath of office.
“I have worked on campaigns for 10 years now and always knew that I would someday be standing in this very spot with a lot of these same very faces out in front of me and with the excitement and joy of getting to join this wonderful group of folks up here and to be their colleague,” Baker said. “And I look forward to serving everyone in San Marcos.”
Hughson then issued a certificate of election to Gonzales, who was given the oath of office by Justice of the Peace Maggie Moreno.
“I want to thank the community for coming out and voting again, I really appreciate it,” Gonzales said. “I’m honored to serve you another three years. I’m looking forward to it, I have learned so much. I’m going to be a better councilmember than before.”
In other business, the Council voted to select councilmember Ed Mihalkanin as the city’s new Mayor Pro-Tem. Likewise, council voted to choose councilmember Mark Rockeymoore as Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem.
