Mason Moreno breaks SMHS Wrestling career wins record

Senior captain Mason Moreno is known as one of the hardest workers on his team.

The four-year starter is quiet by nature and has a calm demeanor off the mat. But on the mat, he is a fierce competitor who finishes most of his matches by pin. He will usually wear his opponents down, work them onto their backs, and once the match is over extends his hand to help them up.

On Dec. 21 at the Hill Country Invitational, Mason’s hard work paid off as he made school history by winning his 108th match. The previous record of 107 wins was set by Serenity Villalobos, a former team captain and San Marcos' first Regional Champion.

Mason started the tournament on fire with two pins to tie the record. His next match was in the semifinals against a State Qualifier. Mason toughed out a 7-2 win to become the all-time winningest wrestler in school history. He went on to lose a tough match in the Finals against a former State Champion, finishing the tournament with four wins and one loss. He attributes his winning ways to discipline, staying healthy, great coaching and awesome teammates.

“Mason is one of those athletes that everything he does surprises you, and at the same time nothing surprises you, because he is such a great athlete,” head coach Garvin Smith said. “I enjoy coaching Mason, he always works hard, and never complains!”

Added assistant coach Jeremy Cross: “The only thing that matches his drive for success is his compassion for his teammates.”
