Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 combined its annual Scholarship and Citizenship Education Teacher Awards with their Christmas party on Dec. 19.
Patriot Pen Scholarships are for students in grades 6-8 that wrote an essay on “What makes America Great” with 1st place ($200) going to Kara Leftwich, 2nd place ($150) was Bobbi Schubert, and 3rd place ($100) went to Adam Davis.
Voice of Democracy is for students in 9-12 that submitted and Audio Essay on “What makes America Great.” There was only one student that submitted an essay so therefore 1st place ($300) was Courtney Matthews. Both Leftwich and Matthews advanced to District 5 competition.
Citizenship Education Teacher Awards went to Anna Wright ($200) grades 1-5 at Rodriguez Elementary, no entry for 6-8, and LTC Lenny Cianciotto ($200) grades 9-12 at San Marcos Academy. Both Wright and Cianciotto advanced to District 5 Teachers competition. Cianciotto also won at District 5 and will be awarded his prize Feb. 9 at the New Braunfels VFW. Maurice T.
