The City of San Marcos proclaimed February as Black History Month on Monday. "Black History Month commemorates the successes and achievements by African-Americans, both in overcoming many obstacles and in making significant contributions to our community, our state, our nation and the world; and WHEREAS, The Dunbar Heritage Association recognizes the significance of the contributions of local San Marcos historians such as Ollie Giles and Harvey Miller and organizations such as The Calaboose African American History Museum, and the Dunbar Arts, Cultural, and Innovation District that work tirelessly to educate, preserve, and honor the rich cultural history of African Americans," the proclamation reads.
