SMCISD Board approves election services contracts

SMCISD Board approves election services contracts

The San Marcos Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees approved several items related to its upcoming election.

The board approved a resolution to participate in a joint election with Hays County on May 2. Three board of trustee positions are up for election. Miguel Arredondo (Single Member District 1), Margie Villalpando (Single Member District 2) and Lupe Costilla (Single Member District 3) all have their current terms as trustees coming to an end this year.

The trustees approved contracts with Hays, Caldwell and Guadalupe counties for the purpose of election services for the May 2 election.

Additionally, the filing period for the upcoming election came to a close on Feb. 14. Arredondo filed for re-election for District 1. James Bryant Jr. will challenge Arredondo.

Villalpando is running unopposed for District 2. Villalpando’s district features Caldwell County and it is expected that the election contract with Caldwell will be canceled at the next regular board meeting, according to discussions at Monday’s meeting.

Lupe Costilla withdrew her re-election bid for District 3. Nicholas Costilla and Mayra Mejia will vie for the open position.

A draw for placement on the ballot will take place on Friday at 4 p.m. at the SMCISD Administration Building at 631 Mill St.

In other business, the board approved a district calendar for the 2020-2021 school year, which features a teacher report back date of Aug. 14; first day of school on Aug. 24; professional learning for staff on Oct. 23; staff work day on Jan. 4, 2021; student return from holiday break on Jan. 5, 2021; professional learning for staff on March 5, 2021; and last day of school on June 3, 2021.

The trustees approved a request for proposal that allows district funds to be moved into additional local bank depository accounts.  The board approved an interlocal agreement between SMCISD and the City of San Marcos for shared use of Mendez Elementary field for pickleball. The trustees also approved action to accept the Transportation Annex Bond Project. Funds for the project come from the May 2017 bond.

The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for March 9 at 6 p.m. at San Marcos High School — 2601 Rattler Rd. — inside the Criminal Justice Classroom.
