San Marcos police searching for driver in fatal hit and run incident

San Marcos police are searching for a driver involved in a fatal hit and run incident during the weekend.

Police say a 911 dispatcher responded to a caller who reported seeing a man laying on the edge of the road at the 200 block of S. Guadalupe Street on Saturday at approximately 1:27 a.m.

Officers found Eligio Vasquez, 59 of San Antonio, who was not breathing, the San Marcos Police Department said. Police say officers began CPR on Vasquez which was continued by San Marcos fire and Hays County medical personnel.

Responders were able to get Vasquez’s pulse back and he was transported to Seton-Hays in Kyle, however, he was later pronounced dead, SMPD said.

Justice of the Peace Maggie H. Moreno ordered an autopsy through the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office. Next of kin has been notified.

An initial investigation by the San Marcos Police Collision Investigation Team determined the incident to be a hit and run auto-pedestrian collision, officials said. The vehicle and driver involved in the incident were not located. Police say pieces of a vehicle were located and still photos were obtained from security cameras at surrounding businesses.

Investigators say they’re searching for an older model red pick-up truck — potentially an extended cab Chevy S-10 with a missing wire radio antenna on the right side of the hood. The truck should have minor damage to the right front, including the missing antenna, police say. The truck was last seen driving south on South Guadalupe Street following the incident.

This is the third traffic fatality in San Marcos in 2020.

Anyone with information regarding Saturday’s hit and run are urged to call SMPD Sergeant Sam Mayers at 512-753-2182.
