Sportsplex annexation, zoning approved by council

The annexation and zoning of the property intended for a new baseball sportsplex was approved by the San Marcos City Council Tuesday.

The annexation and zoning of the property intended for a new baseball sportsplex was approved by the San Marcos City Council Tuesday.

City council approved the annexation of 62.48 acres at the intersection of Gregsons Bend and Commercial Loop and zoned it as a Planning Area. The final reading of the ordinance will take place April 7, but the ordinances will not become effective until the property is purchased by Pursuant Ventures, LLC.

Zoning it as a Planning Area allows the developer to identify multiple uses including general commercial, light industrial, heavy commercial and employment center.

The sportsplex will include eight sports fields on AstroTurf.

“This is going to be a great addition to our community and because it's AstroTurf, kids can play rain or shine, councilmember Melissa Derrick said. “It's going to be a huge improvement to where our kids have been playing so far.”

Council also approved an ordinance to annex 31 acres on the east side of Highway 123 between Old Bastrop Road and Monterrey Oak Road. The ordinance will be official after the second reading on April 7.

Twelve and a half acres will be zoned CD3, which includes single family homes and 18.5 acres will be zoned CD4 which would be apartments.

There was a petition filed in opposition, however, it did not meet the threshold for a super majority. The planning and zoning commission recommended approval, 5-3.

The plans for the apartment complex include a large amenity package: yoga studio, full gym, pet parks, coffee bars, pet washing stations and rideshare systems in the front of the property.
