SMCISD, SMA extend school closures

San Marcos CISD and San Marcos Academy have extended their school closures following the stay-at-home order issued by Hays County.

The county’s “Stay at Home, Work Safe” order began Thursday night and stretches through April 10 at 4 a.m. SMCISD and SMA will now have their schools closed through April 13.

San Marcos CISD

Although schools will be closed, learning will continue for SMCISD students. For information regarding instructional activities for students visit SMCISD's website. Teachers have begun contacting families to share their classroom plans, Superintendent Michael Cardona said in a letter released Thursday. Families needing academic packets will be able to pick them up at the district’s “grab and go” meal locations, beginning Monday.

“I want to begin this update with a ‘thank you’ to our SMCISD families and staff. Our SMCISD community has been tremendous throughout this pandemic and I am truly grateful,” Cardona wrote. “San Marcos CISD is committed to providing ongoing communication regarding district measures taken to assist public health officials in their prevention of COVID-19. Please know, this is an ongoing situation.”

SMCISD will also be making adjustments to its “grab and go” meal distribution on Monday. The district will be distributing breakfast and lunch from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the following locations: Mendez Elementary School, Travis Elementary School, San Marcos High School, Redwood Baptist Church, Allen Woods Home and CM Allen Homes. SMCISD is adjusting its meal schedule to allow parents to only have to pick up meals once a day. According to information presented at a special called board of trustees meeting on Friday, SMCISD served 6,523 meals during its first week of “grab and go” meals.

San Marcos Academy

San Marcos Academy’s plan is to return to class on Tuesday, April 14, President Brian Guenther said in a letter released Friday.

“Returning at this time will allow us to stay on schedule with graduation plans,” Guenther said. “We realize that circumstances in our county, state, or country could counteract this plan, and we will continue to closely monitor new developments related to the coronavirus pandemic. I have worked with the administrative team to develop alternate plans for graduation. Should a change to our plan become necessary, we will communicate that information to you as soon as possible. Above all, the health and safety of our students and staff will remain our highest priority as any future decisions are made.”

SMA students began distance learning during the week of March 23 and will continue throughout the closure.

“We appreciate the sacrifices you are making as parents to ensure continuity of learning for your children,” Guenther said. “Your diligence and creativity have been a joy to observe as we have received many photos and reports of distance learning."
