Retired teachers continue organizing through Zoom

The San Marcos Area Retired Teachers and Staff (SMARTS) will continue their organizing efforts via Zoom with their upcoming Sept. 8 meeting, scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m.

SMARTS is a group of fun-loving, active retired educators who live in Hays County and surrounding counties. SMARTS and the affiliated Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) are active in the Texas legislature in procuring help for their pension fund and protecting their health care. They also promote volunteerism in their communities and support for all retired educators and staff.

The executive committee of SMARTS has been meeting virtually over the summer to plan Zoom meetings for their group for the 2020-21 year.

TRTA has advised units to meet virtually at least through December.

The September meeting for SMARTS members will be “Zoom into SMARTS” with a meet and greet for members and an introduction of the new slate of officers and committee chairs, with president Janis Brown moderating.

Former president and active member Susan Pulis will facilitate introductions and a fun discussion. Committee reports will be sent to the members by email in advance of the meeting.

SMARTS meets on the second Tuesday of the month, from September through May. They plan programs that are informational, educational and enjoyable.

Any member of SMARTS, or any retired educator who is interested in attending a meeting can attend by Zoom, using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.

Anyone who is interested in details about the meeting or membership can contact Janis Brown at 512-393-9823 or by email: [email protected]. Brown can provide assistance for setting up Zoom.
