City council candidates largely funded by local contributions

Editor’s Note: This is the fourth in a series of articles examining the campaign donations received by local candidates in the Nov. 3 election. In looking at the 30-day campaign finance reports filed by candidates for San Marcos city offices and for Hays County Sheriff and Commissioner races, the Daily Record is highlighting the sources of candidates’ largest donations, donations from special interests and/or political action committees, and donations that come from outside San Marcos.

Editor’s Note: This is the fourth in a series of articles examining the campaign donations received by local candidates in the Nov. 3 election. In looking at the 30-day campaign finance reports filed by candidates for San Marcos city offices and for Hays County Sheriff and Commissioner races, the Daily Record is highlighting the sources of candidates’ largest donations, donations from special interests and/or political action committees, and donations that come from outside San Marcos.

City Council Place 3

Incumbent San Marcos City Councilmember Ed Mihalkanin reported $2,475 political contributions and $5,515 political expenditures.

Challenger Alyssa Garza’s total political contributions were $1,170. Alyssa’s political expenditures totaled $1,203.

Mihalkanin’s contributions were mostly $100-$200 from individuals living in San Marcos. Mihalkanin’s largest donations were $400 from Mayor Jane Hughson, $300 from himself and $250 from James Baker.

Garza’s largest donation was $500 from Dr. Audwin Anderson at Texas State University., followed by $250 from Erin Ckodre. The remainder of her contributions were from mostly local individuals who donated under $100.

City Council Place 4

Incumbent Councilmember Mark Rockeymoore reported $2,077 in political contributions and $1,630 in expenditures. Rockeymoore received many individual contributions smaller than $100.

His largest contribution was $500 from Maya Rockeymore and $450 from Michelle Belfie, a filmmaker and social activist in Brookeville, Md.

Challenger Shane Scott reported zero political contributions and $408 in expenditures.

City Council Place 5

In the last financial report, Omar Baca had the most political contributions for Place 5 with $1,580 and $1,277 in political expenditures. Mark Gleason and Sambrano followed with a close tie with Gleason bringing in $450 in contributions with $3,144 in expenditures and Sambrano raising $410 in contributions and spending $1,828.

The Oct. 5 report revealed higher contributions for all candidates with Gleason bring in $3,290 with $216 in expenditures, followed by a close tie between Sambrano with $1,400 contributions and $2,530 in expenditures and Baca at $1335 in contributions and $854 in expenditures.

Gleason’s largest contribution for the most recent report was $250 from the San Marcos Police Officers Association. In his earlier financial reporting, Gleason appeared to be the most popular candidate among businesses with 11 donations from local businesses and 1 from Dave Krusemark, a farmer in Madison Montana. Owners of Germer Insurance, Mochas and Javas, Premier Cuts, San Marcos Athletic Club, Tractor Construction LLC, Crystal River Inn, Century 21 Randall Morris & Associates, Stokes Construction and the Taproom and the Porch as well as an enrolled tax agent donated between $100 and $300 to his campaign.

Sambrano’s largest donations were $100 from Frank Arredondo, director of the Kyle Housing Authority. His other donations were less than $100 from relatives or local individuals.

Baca’s largest donation was $1,000 from John Archer in New Braunfels. The remainder were small donations under $100 mostly from local individuals; his Oct. 5 report showed most donations in the amount of $25. In that report he also received a donation from the Texas Realtors PAC in an undisclosed amount. sgates
