Gary Community Relations Council 2024
The Gary Job Corps Center hosted the Community Relations Council to show appreciation for a Wonderful 2023 and discuss the plans for a successful 2024. The students and staff have assisted with many community projects, and part of the meeting was the planning of the upcoming year. The Gary staff and students have been active over the years in building projects and volunteer events in the following Central Texas cities: Dripping Springs, Wimberley, Driftwood, Austin, Georgetown, Lockhart, Maxwell, Martindale, Luling, Prairie Lea, Redwood, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Bastrop, Buda, Kyle and San Marcos.

County hand- delivers jury summonses
Thousands of residents in Hays County received an unexpected letter over the last week as the Constable offices across Hays County had to hand deliver jury summonses. The unique circumstance came up because of an “error by a Hays County vendor that has affected more than 6,000 jury notices throughout multiple county offices,” according to Hays County District Clerk Avrey Anderson Sr.

Aqua Texas sues groundwater district over pumping fine
The National Weather Service website stated that as of Jan. 4, 24% of the Hill Country is in what is considered extreme drought conditions, which is the second to the worst drought designation category. Additionally, 20% of the Hill Country is in severe drought, which is a level below extreme. Aquifer levels reached the lowest point since the 1950s. Issues around groundwater usage and the limitations thereof have gotten contentious.

Mental Health Court adds substance abuse treatment services
With the high rates of drug addiction among those in incarceration and the current state of the drug crisis both locally and nationally at the top of many people's minds, the County Court at Law Mental Health Specialty Court, added substance use treatment to the list of resources for the jail diversion program. The court was created last year and is meant to prevent those that have a mental illness that have committed a crime from incarceration through a series of mental health services. Hays County Commissioners Court approved the execution of a $45,000 contract between Evoke Wellness and the specialty court at the regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, which sparked a conversation on the need for such services in the community at large and the link between drug addiction and criminal behavior.
