'Never done it' is long, interesting, yet odd list
A few days ago, my wife and I were taking our evening almost-senior- citizen power stroll, and the subject of Hooters came up. Yes, Hooters. And I’ll tell you why (even if you wish I wouldn’t).

School funding requires a basic math approach
No magic math, please As a retired CPA reading about the upcoming special legislative session regarding private school vouchers, I’m reminded of a fundamental accounting principle: every financial transaction has equal and opposite effects in at least two different accounts.

Driverless cars need regulation in these times
Texas is perfect for testing driverless cars, but technology will outpace regulation As autonomous cars become more common, state leaders must look far down the road.

Mother-to-be feels unsupported by her in-laws and husband
DEAR ABBY: My husband and I are expecting our first child this year. I moved to the United States a few years ago to be with him. His family is mostly absent from our lives. I have tried to make an effort with my in-laws, but it’s always met with failure. They make excuses, so we have come to accept that we see them only during holidays. It has put a strain on our marriage.

Son neglects aging mom with girlfriends come along
DEAR ABBY: My son’s former wife was difficult -- manipulative, spoiled and possessive. I tried to get along with her, but no matter what I did, she gave me no respect and turned my son against me. They have been divorced for six years. He began dating a few years ago, and each woman is a carbon copy of the ex-wife. He falls right back into the same pattern of ignoring me and letting his girlfriends “possess” him. I’m deeply hurt. I don’t understand why he feels he has to choose between them and me. He is my son, and I shouldn’t have to compete for his love.

At its 50-year mark, support, strengthen Public Information Act
With trust in government waning, a Texas law can help keep a closer watch on public officials. Even citizens who continue to have faith in government can use this law to stay better informed.

Fiance’s co-worker puts on a show, makes fiance uneasy
DEAR ABBY: My fiance and I went to his co-worker “Tina’s” house on a Friday night to socialize and play trivia games. We had been at her place before, for a Christmas party. Tina wore a short skirt, and when she sat down you could see all the way up to her black lace panties. During our “headsup” game she sat right across from my fiance. While people were laughing and having fun drinking and playing games, all I could notice were her panties and Tina’s loud laughs. She was drinking, and my fiance asked her, “Baby, are you feeling OK?” He said it loudly. Everyone heard it, and I felt myself getting really angry and red in the face. Why was he calling her Baby? We call each other that!

When’s best time for Texans to save on using energy?
So. ERCOT begs you to conserve energy — and as a good Texan not wanting to contribute to the catastrophic collapse of the power grid during a triple-digit heat wave, you comply.

Free refills: Arch-nemis of Golden Arches?
So, now the fuzzy purple critter isn’t the only “grimace” I’ll associate with the McDonald’s chain.

Paxton acquitted on all impeachment counts
Ken Paxton has been reinstated as Texas Attorney General after the Texas Senate on Saturday acquitted him of charges of bribery and misuse of office. Only two Republican senators joined the 12 Democrats in voting to convict him of some of the 16 charges heard by the Senate, with four other charges dismissed by the Senate, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Writers, actors strikes affect political show
NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” hasn’t cracked a Joe Biden joke since April 15, when cast member Michael Che quipped, “President Biden has tried to downplay the recent leak of classified U.S. documents that were posted on social media, because when you’re over 80 a couple of leaks are nothing to be embarrassed about.”
