At long last, these new flowers were meant to bee
As you are reading this column, Meant to Bee Queen Nectarine and Meant to Bee Royal Raspberry, two new agastache varieties, are approaching their 100th day of bloom at The Garden Guy’s house. Both agastache or hummingbird mint varieties will be making their debut in 2023 and in a summer of miserable heat, my trials of these flower varieties has brought joy and excitement.

Local teacher featured in book on teaching
Connie Bagley, of San Marcos, was featured in a recently-published book on teaching. “Great Teachers: Exploring Excellence in Education” profiles eight of the greatest teachers in the United States. According to author Dr. Kevin Bartram, “In ‘Great Teachers,’ we take you inside the classrooms — and the heads — of some of America’s greatest teachers, opening the door to those inspired teaching strategies that distinguish excellence in the field of education. Superbells Prism Pink Lemonade: A Calibrachoa with rare coloration
There is a new Superbells calibrachoa making its debut in 2023 that is so beautiful and unusual, I’ve even wondered if Proven Winners knows what they have. Had calibrachoas been around in 1800 as Empress Josephine was constructing the gardens at Le Château de Malmaison, Superbells Prism Pink Lemonade would have been her first choice.

Bobcat Adriana Scalice on tour with ‘Mean Girls’
When Adriana Scalice was a high school student in Rochester, NY, she did not expect to end up in Texas. But after a series of serendipitous auditions and connections made between San Marcos and her hometown high school, she wound up enrolled at Texas State.

The Tempest
Studying Shakespeare at any age, but especially from a young age, is transformative for the mind and soul. William Shakespeare’s works may be close to 400 years old, but the lessons and themes in his plays are timeless. Studies have proven that children that study Shakespeare have a deeper understanding of all literature they study, have greater empathy and are more appreciative of history and its impact on literature and society. Additionally, studying Shakespeare helps heighten creative play and imagination.
