Island Comfort Food
Winter weather can be relentless and make it challenging to stay warm and dry. After a session of shoveling snow or braving the great outdoors, a meal that can quickly warm the core is fitting — especially if that meal can serve doubleduty by evoking feelings of a warm climate.

Market Milestone: Art Squared celebrates 10th anniversary
Art Squared has become a popular activity amongst San Marcans, as it is the largest art market in the area, located in the heart of Downtown San Marcos. From its humble beginnings in 2012 as ‘Art Unhitched,’ Art Squared has become an important part of over 40 artists’ businesses nearly every month. ‘Tootsie’ to open Tuesday at Bass Concert Hall
When people think of the movie “Tootsie,” they recall an uncomfortable Dustin Hoffman in a spangly red sequin dress. The movie, which appeared in theaters in 1982, was built around counterpoints: social commentary with farce, seriousness with absurdity, while at the same time making some important observations about sexism.

The awards keep coming for Supertunia Mini Vista Petunias
The awards just keep coming. When I last wrote about the Supertunia Mini Vista Indigo, it was in 2020 and it was making its debut. It had already won 24 awards in trials, even though it was just arriving to the public. Now the awards are three dozen and, in fact, the Supertunia Mini Vista series now totals over 160. How can this be for a petunia with the word mini in its name?

How to talk to your teens and pre-teens about healthy relationships
The following article is part three of a four-week series focusing on raising awareness about dating violence. February is Dating Violence Awareness month, and we hope to educate our community on this very important issue. One-inthree young people will experience dating violence in their lifetime. Locally, the Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center has been serving victims of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, and child abuse since 1978. Last year, HCWC served 2,055 victims of abuse (face-to-face) primarily from Hays and Caldwell Counties.

If you love the river, you love the Habitat Conservation Plan
San Marcos is not San Marcos without San Marcos Springs and the San Marcos River. San Marcos is defined by the river that runs through it. We would not be here if not for the springs and river, an oasis on the Camino Real, itself an old Native American trail, connecting north and south Texas. Texans settled here because of the springs where Ed Burleson borrowed the flows to grind grain and cut lumber for a growing town. More recently, the springs and river provide a water resource and a quality of life that other towns in the area don’t have.
