Types of awards change over time
Types of awards change over time
I have almost retired from being a race director but still act as a consultant to organizations that want to put on a fund raising event and want some direction. One of the questions that groups ask about putting on a race is what age groups should they include and what type of an award for the winners in these age groups. Looking back at some of the awards I gave to runners and some of the awards I received when I ran in races it seems the difference is how many of the awards are still around. Early races were mostly a wooden or tin column of various height with a figure on top. The figures were of a runner or a victory woman standing with her arms above her head. Occasionally the race came up with a unique figure that represented the name of the race. I had some that were horses, longhorns, and half-moon figures if the race was in the evening. There were races that gave out various sized medals that you could hang around your neck. The medals ranged from a nice 4 inch diameter with a design logo on it to a small 2 inch medal that had the standard runner logo on it. I was never one to have a trophy shelf for the various awards so different locations in the house were temporary spots for them. With house renovations and moving furniture the trophies have been lost. 02/12/2023 05:00 AM

Content compensation at issue in JCPA bill
In its infinite wisdom, Congress let the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) die a silent death after having had it on the front burners for the past couple of years. I hope our industry is not doing the same. 02/12/2023 05:00 AM

Texas State faculty member stars in Austin Shakepeare’s “The Real Thing”
Kate Glasheen loves her job. Even after catching the red eye home from on-site auditions in Chicago to teach her 9:30 a.m. class at Texas State, then fielding press interviews during lunch for her upcoming show — Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing” — before heading to Austin for that show’s rehearsals, she will tell you how fortunate she is to love everything that she does. 02/12/2023 05:00 AM

Commissioners approve 10% raises for 465 employees
Commissioners approve 10% raises for 465 employees
The road to get here has been long and treacherous, but last Tuesday, Hays County Judge Ruben Beccera and the majority of commissioners court approved a 10% income increase for Hays County employees making under $100,000. The 4-to-1 vote took place after nearly eight months of discussion and planning. In June of 2022, the commissioners court approved a salary study contract with Management Advisory Group International, LLC to determine a fair and fiscally responsible way to implement raises. The study was expected to be completed by September of 2022 in order to provide relief for those still struggling with the rippling effects of COVID-19 and the onset of high inflation. However, the plan has still not been completed, something that frustrated commissioners on the dais. 02/10/2023 12:00 AM

Stranger’s abrupt revelation
Stranger’s abrupt revelation rocks woman’s world
DEAR ABBY: I had pretty much an ideal childhood. My parents have never had issues that I ever saw. We went to church every Sunday, gathered with family often, etc. I’m now grown, and my parents are in their mid-80s. 02/10/2023 12:00 AM
