UPDATE:

San Marcos Police are searching for a man who entered an apartment at The Cottages of San Marcos and threatened a resident with a handgun on Tuesday.

Both the resident and the intruder fled the scene on foot, said Brandon Winkenwerder, assistant police chief. SMPD set up a perimeter in hopes of catching the suspect but the perimeter was jeopardized when a separate incident occurred at the same complex.

“That perimeter, however, was compromised when a second call came in to the San Marcos Police Department for a male subject who climbed into the window of a separate apartment in that complex,” Winkenwerder said. “SMPD officers searched that apartment and found a male subject inside, however, he was not a resident. It was learned that he was given authority by the resident to enter the apartment in that manner.”

The San Marcos Police Department approximated the intruder to be 6-foot-2 or 6-foot-3 tall. He was described as wearing a long sleeve black shirt, black pants, black gloves and a black mask covering his face.

Alongside Tuesday’s incident, the SMPD Criminal Investigations Division is also investigating an aggravated sexual assault/burglary of habitation that occured on April 24 in the same complex. The man suspected was described as a black male with an athletic build in his 20s, approximately 6-feet tall. He was seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants, black gloves, black socks, black slide sandals and a mask covering the lower half of his face.

Winkenwerder said the subject in both incidents have similar builds. But the race of the man in Tuesday’s event remains unknown, making it difficult for officers to make comparisons.

“Without knowing the race of the suspect, it’s a little tough to draw the parallel,” Winkenwerder said. “But they are very similar.”

Anyone with information is asked to call detective Dave Campbell at 512-753-2312

“We’d also like to remind everyone that you lock your residence at all times when you’re at home or away,” Winkenwerder said. “Make sure your window locks work, your door locks work. If you live in an apartment complex, report that to management so they can get those issues fixed. Anyone seeing anything suspicious around their residence, neighbors they don’t know, people they don’t know, give us a call and let us check it out.”
