'A Room of One's Own'

International Women's Day
Friday, February 22, 2019

The San Marcos Public Library will be celebrating the expression of women artists this International Women’s Day, March 8 from 4-6 p.m., by hosting an art exhibition with all local women artists.

Local artist Debangana Banerjee curated the show based on the essay “A Room of One’s Own,” by Virginia Woolf.

“I chose the topic based on Virginia Woolf’s essay ‘A Room of One’s Own, because I thought that for a woman artist, a personal room for creation can be very significant,” Banerjee said. “We should all build our own rooms – with key and lock – where we can produce our most honest own reality.”

So far 25, artists are participating – including Kathryn Voigtel Welch, Lisa McPike Smith, Kelsey Huckaby, Earlene Graham, Margaret Adie, Linda Kelsey-Jones and many more. Poetry and live music will also be provided by Cynthia Juniper, Kelany Brent, Emily Watson, Rebecca Bowman, Angie Campbell-Johnson, Diann McCabe, Debangana Banerjee and Molly Jane during the event.

Banerjee said her focus with organizing this art show was less about the professional curation of the show, but on creating a celebration of women artist and expression.

“My  focus has not been on a proper art show, but how as women artists we can celebrate this day through our very honest expression,” Banerjee said. “As a woman artist I wanted to do something on the occasion of International Women’s Day and I thought that the celebration would be more meaningful if I can do it along with other local women artists. We all create art regularly and we use different mediums. We belong to different age groups and have different cultural backgrounds. This will be a great day to showcase our art together. An important day to show the community how local women artists are thinking, how they are blending their imaginations with their real-world experiences.”

The International Women’s Day art show is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided by the library. For more information, call 512-393-8200.
