Celebrate 100 years of state parks in 2023
Sunday, December 31, 2023

For everyone looking to be more active in 2024, take heart in the knowledge that you are not alone. According to a recent article in Forbes Magazine, “More people cite improved fitness as a top resolution (48%) compared to improved finances (38%), improved mental health (36%), weight loss (34%) and improved diet (32%).”

Those of us in Texas have the happy coincidence of being able to combine getting more fit with celebrating 100 years of Texas State Parks by finding a First Day Hike on New Year’s Day.

A First Day Hike is a way to start off the New Year committed to a resolution for better health while exploring the varied natural world that this state has to offer.

For example, Texas State Parks boast forested trails, boardwalk strolls through wetlands and on beaches, climbs into the mountains and ventures into the desert. Not all First Day Hikes need to be hikes, in fact. Texas Parks also lead bike rides, kayak tours and even horseback rides. No matter a person’s current activity level, there will be a park or event that’s a perfect fit.

As stated on the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, “We offer both guided and self-guided hikes. If you choose a self-guided hike, be sure to look for tables or stop at headquarters for hike information and maps. After your hike, stop back by to report on your hike and collect a memento of your visit.”

Enchanted Rock State Park offers a Midnight Summit Hike tonight starting at 10:30 p.m. This special guided hike allows visitors to ring in the New Year from the top of the Rock, with a panoramic view of Texas sky at night. Enchanted Rock State Park is located 17 miles north of Fredericksburg, so it makes for an easy and leisurely day trip. For information, visit the website at: tpwd.texas.gov/calendar/enchanted- rock/first-day-hike-midnight-summit-hike.

Another nearby First Day Hike is available at McKinney Falls State Park with its 2.8-mile Onion Creek Hike and Bike Trail. This is a self-guided hike, but all participants who stop by the visitor center upon completion will receive a First Day Hike sticker.

For a list of all First Day Hikes, check out the website at tpwd.texas.gov/calendar/first-dayhikes.
