Hands of Hope’s Tea ’N more returns

Sunday, March 20, 2022

Spring is in the air and that means the Hands of Hope Tea ‘N More is returning. An anticipated event over the past 17 years, this high tea has raised funds for the all-volunteer, ecumenical ministry that has helped to change the lives of over 150 women and their families.

Having outgrown the Price Center, this year’s tea will take place in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church (325 West McCarty Lane) allowing for more tables. The tea will take place April 23, beginning at 1 p.m. with table previews and a silent auction. The high tea, provided by The Texas Pie Company of Kyle, will begin at 2:30 p.m.; and a spring style show by Chico’s and Brighton will begin shortly after.

Tables set by table hostesses using their own china, silverware and imagination to provide the tea’s centerpieces. Those interested in setting a table or sponsoring a table ($100) please contact Trista Stubbelfield at First Baptist Church at 512-392-3377. Tickets, which must be purchased before the tea, are $25 per person and may be purchased through Trista Stubbelfield also.

Hands of Hope offers two free 10- week sessions providing a Christian context in which women in need are equipped for life and employment. Classes change from semester to semester depending on the needs of the participants. The women spend five hours a day, four days a week in classes. Currently, the classes include daily Bible study, Skills to Pay the Bills (job-readiness), Math, Individualized Computer Training, Writing/Reading/ESL (when needed), Language Arts, Health and Nutrition, Personal Discovery, Exercise and Communication.

All classes are taught by retired certified teachers or persons who have expertise in that area. Coordinators, teachers, mentors, and Advisory Council members are affiliated with a variety of churches in San Marcos. Each participant is teamed with a trained Mentor, who meets and encourages her throughout the session and for 6 months afterwards. All positions in Hands of Hope are staffed by volunteers. Transportation, childcare, and a daily meal are provided by church and community groups. When ladies graduate from Hands of Hope, they have the possibility to move forward with additional training/ education with help from the Hands of Hope Scholarship Fund.
