May Art Squared Arts Market

Friday, May 10, 2019

Mother’s Day is Sunday and those that haven’t found a perfect gift for mom yet will have handmade works from over 40 Central Texan artisans to choose from at this month’s Art Squared Arts Market.

Art Squared Arts Market is held every second Saturday, March through December, and features regional artists offering original handmade art and fine crafts as well as live music, art demonstrations and a free kid’s arts and crafts booth on the downtown square from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The featured artist for this month is Kim Algoe of SkinZen. SkinZen is a small, home-based, Austin company dedicated to making skin enhancing products that provide both function and pleasure to its customers, offering the perfect blend of science and art –— practical, useful and beautiful.

Algoe’s soaps are handcrafted in small batches, using natural ingredients, no detergents, chemical fillers or preservatives. Having the freedom to customize nearly every part of the recipe, from the colors to the design to the fragrance, there are endless variations and each one is a piece of art. Using mostly micas, clays and other natural colorants, she blends colors into each batch and applies different techniques for their addition and combination into the mold. This is what makes each bar of soap unique. From pours to swirls to layers, twists and plops, there is no end to the possibilities. Pick up a bar of your own SkinZen soap at Art Squared or visit SkinZen's website

This month’s featured nonprofit is the San Marcos Lions Club. The San Marcos Lion’s Club is perhaps known best in the area for their Tube Rental and River Shuttle. The organization uses those sunny yellow tubes as a fundraising tool, with all proceeds supporting many charities and educational opportunities for students in the area.

Are an assortment of her handmade bathbombs that come in scents like amber rose, lavender, spearmint eucalyptus, peach bellini, oatmeal, milk and honey and sandalwood.

The San Marcos Lions Club tube rental originally began during the 1970s out of a cattle truck with a portable air compressor and recycled automotive tubes. They would show up about 10 a.m. on the weekends and rent tubes out of a truck behind Joe’s Crab Shack. When the day was over, the tubes were stored in a member’s garage. What started out as 20-40 tube rentals a day has grown to 800-850 rentals a day, making this program the single largest fundraising event by the San Marcos Area Lions Club.

Today, they have a building in City Park and each year students from Bobcat Build and other volunteers work with Lions to get the Tube Rental ready for business. Now, the tube rental allows the Lions Club to donate to over 100 charities and individuals in our area. Stop by their booth at Art Squared to find out more or go to Lions Club's website.

This month’s featured live music is a four-piece pop-rock alternative band AuraZora. AuraZora performs both original materials and covers songs from the 1970s. They have swing and folk undertones with plenty of soul influence. Based out of San Marcos, Aurazora has played a variety of venues throughout Central Texas, from coffee bars and clubs to wedding venues and private events. The band is anchored by the powerful voice and rhythm guitar work of Kelany Brent, a recent graduate of Texas State University. Brent is an accomplished musician, poet and songwriter. She has a rare talent for making familiar cover songs all her own. Jake Olson adds fine lead guitar work, Chris McNamara keeps the rhythm on drums and percussion, and David Orosco holds down the bottom on bass. Enjoy the sounds of Aurazora, from 1-3 p.m at Art Squared.
