Presentation to touch on Guadalupe County slave history

Sunday, February 3, 2019

The San Marcos-Hays Co. Genealogical Society will host a presentation by Herman Harris about the relationship of the slaveowning Addison Johnson family and the Henry Johnson/Harris slave family in a presentation entitled “The Hand of God.”

The meeting will be on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 120 Suncrest.

This is an American story of slavery, freedom, success and good will. His family now owns the land originally owned by the Addison Johnson family. Harris is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University – now Texas State University.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, was a resident mentor at Gary Job Corps, served as a federal police officer and now works as a landman and active rancher. He currently serves as secretary of the Guadalupe County Appraisal Review Board and is a past director of the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has nominated Harris for Farmer/Rancher of the year because of improvements he has made to his property.

The public is invited to hear Harris’s presentation. For more information, call 512-392-2097.
