SACRED TIMES

SACRED TIMES
Friday, October 6, 2023

This Saturday and Sunday offer visitors an opportunity to share in a cultural tableau that defines in no small measure the rich origins of this nation. The 2023 Sacred Springs Powwow will transform the Meadow Center into a mix of dance and music, all embraced by a deep appreciation for preserving cultural heritage. Native Americans–those indigenous to Texas and northern Mexico, primarily for this event–maintain a devoted interest in honoring and securing sacred sites.

This event is produced by the Indigenous Cultures Institute, with the first Sacred Springs Powwow sponsored by the Tomblin Family in 1995. For me, my French Canadian ancestry takes in the Iroquois Confederacy. These two days are thus quite special for me. On each day of the event, there will be a blessing and one should plan to be a part of that moment. The blessing on Saturday at the shores of the Sacred Spring is at 10 a.m. On Sunday, it takes place at 11 a.m.

What follows includes workshops, an opportunity to share in the pageantry of participants in native dress and dance competitions. Each day concludes with a prayer. There is free parking at Bobcat Stadium, 100 Aquarena Springs Dr., where one may then ride the shuttle bus to the Powwow. There is a charge for admission, but it is so worth it. Go to sspowwow.com
