A weekend to spend in the Emerald City, San Marcos-Style

WHAT TO DO THIS WEEKEND
Friday, February 24, 2023

A classic musical and wine-tasting top the list of places to go this weekend.

First, the SMCISD Crockett Elementary K-5 students will perform their version of the well known, “Wizard of Oz.” The show follows the adventures of L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy as she is whisked into the land of Oz, faces witches and a scarecrow, a man made of tin, and a cowardly lion, all the while searching for a way to return home to Kansas.

The show is at the school and starts at 6 p.m., Friday. Coordinating the show is teacher Kirsten Boyd. The school is located at 300 Girard St.

The League of Women Voters of Hays County is hosting its annual 2023 LWV Hays County Wine Tasting Fundraiser. The event runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Kissing Tree Residential Community Center, located at 201 Kissing Tree Lane. A silent auction will be held in addition to the wine tasting festivities. In the past, this has been one of the League’s most anticipated and well attended events. Numerous local organizations are sponsoring the event, according to the LWV which uses funds raised here to facilitate programs and events throughout the year.

The Gray Horse Saloon is sponsoring “A Significantly Loud Benefit for Billy” to assist in raising funds for San Marcos resident Billy Williams. Williams lost his home and belongings in a fire just before Christmas. His daughter, Bevra Williams, said her father is encouraged by the outpouring of community support. The cost to attend is $10 for those 21 and over. Performing are Screamin’J, Perro Amargo, Redbeardwall, and Sabbath Crow.

In addition to the bands and performers who will be at the saloon starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, Bevra and family members will be selling $5 plates of hot dogs and chips. Wimberley’s Blanco Brew donated fresh baked cinnamon rolls that will be available for purchase during the event. The funds raised will be used for Williams to start building again, including a concrete slab for a new home. Come out and help a neighbor get a new home.
