City makes appointments to boards, commissions
The Planning and Zoning Commission will have one new member even as two familiar faces return to the decision-making body.
At its meeting Tuesday night, the San Marcos City Council appointed members to a plethora of city boards and commissions, including P&Z, the Neighborhood Commission, the Historic Preservation Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals and the city’s newest body, the Parking Advisory Board.
For P&Z, council had to choose three commissioners, including one to replace commission member Angie Ramirez, who has served for six years and is not eligible for reappointment. Council chose Travis Kelsey, who has served on the commission before; Betseygail Rand, who currently sits on P&Z; and Gabrielle Moore.
Appointees to the Neighborhood Commission are Cathy Dillon for Sector 1, Jose Cantu for Sector 2, Jennifer Katz for Sector 3, Estella Enriquez for Sector 5, Shane Scott for Sector 7 and Kendra Wesson for Texas State Student Affairs. The commission currently has no Associated Student Government representative, and the Sector 8 seat is vacant, City Clerk Jamie Lee Case said.
Council was asked to fill three slots on the Historic Preservation Commission. Members chose current commissioners Alex Arlinghaus and Bob Holder and named Jordan Buckley to the commission as a representative of downtown.
For the Zoning Board of Adjustments and Appeals, three current members eligible for reappointment applied to keep their seats: Gloria Fortin, Michael Noal and Gary Pack. Council chose Floyd Akers to fill a fourth vacancy on the board.
Council also chose members of the Parking Advisory Board, which requires some members to be property owners or business owners in the parking benefit district, one member to represent Main Street and one representing the Downtown Association. Additionally, two council members hold nonvoting positions on the board.
Case pointed out that the ordinance creating the Parking Advisory Board states that the city will “endeavor to” include these specific positions with the understanding that it might be difficult to find people qualified to fill those spots.
Council eventually chose Kelly Stone as the Main Street recommended member, Carina Boston-Pinales as the Downtown Association recommended member, Johnny Finch as a representative property owner, Kyle Mylius as a representative business owner, and three at-large members: Esther Garcia, Esther Henk and Chris Rue.
Mayor Jane Hughson asked members of council if any of them would like to serve on the board.
“We’ll look for volunteers before we look for ‘voluntold,’” she said.
No one had to be “voluntold,” as council members Melissa Derrick and Joca Marquez spoke up to fill the two city council positions on the board.
