The City of San Marcos’ Bobcats Give Back program diverted over 6,000 pounds of material from landfills by donating it to the local non-profits.

The city announced Friday that it had diverted 6,006 pounds of materials during its 2019 summer collection campaign from 13 apartment complexes, a residential drop-off site on Craddock Street and a drop-off site at Texas State University.

“We are thrilled with the response from Texas State students who donated useful items they typically would have thrown out at the end of the school year,” said Amy Kirwin, City of San Marcos Community Enhancement Initiatives Manager. “Bobcats Give Back is a great example of how fostering connections between the student populations and local organizations encourages positive outcomes.”

The city said 55% percent of the materials collected were clothes, 14% included miscellaneous items, 13% was food, furniture collected was 9%, small appliances took up 6%, 2% was personal hygiene items and 1% of materials collected were pet supplies.

The following local organizations benefited from the donations — Goodwill, Greater San Marcos Youth Council, Habitat ReStore, Hays-Caldwell Women’s Center, Hays County Food Bank, JOSCO Products, Redwood Community Center, and the San Marcos Animal Shelter.

The 13 participating apartment complexes were Cabana Beach, Copper Beech, Elevation on Post, Grove San Marcos, Hillside Ranch, Iconic Village, River Oaks Villas, Savannah Club, Treehouse, University Club, Uptown Square, Vie Lofts, and Westfield.

The city’s Neighborhood Enhancement Division is working to expand Bobcats Give Back for 2020.
