First Tuesday screens 'Winnebago Man'

Tuesday, October 3, 2023

The First Tuesday SMTX Film Series today will screen the film, “Winnebago Man,” a documentary.

Filmmakers Ben Steinbauer and Berndt Mader will attend the screening at The Price Center, 222 W. San Antonio.

Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. with free beer and pizza from the Pie Society & Middleton Brewery for attendees beginning at 6:30 p.m. The film starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.

For information about this film, organizers suggest typing“The Angriest Man in the World” into any search engine and expect one name to appear– Jack Rebney, a.k.a. “The Winnebago Man”–a 1980s RV salesman whose hilarious, profanity- strewn, on-the-job meltdown was captured on video and passed around on VHS tapes, before exploding into an Internet phenomenon seen by millions.

Filmmaker Steinbauer goes in search of the infamous viral video star and discovers him living a hermit-like existence on top of a mountain, unaware of his fame.

According to the film, Rebney turns out to be as sharp-tongued as ever, but more intelligent and lovable than anyone could have imagined. The film is a funny and unexpectedly redemptive tale of one man’s response to unintended celebrity, and proof that the truth is both stranger and funnier than fiction. The film was an official selection at SXSW and runs 87min.

First Tuesday SMTX Film Series partners include San Marcos Commission for the Arts, Pie Society, Middleton Brewing, La Cima, Greater San Marcos Partnership, Divided Sky, Center for Texas Music History at TXST, H-E-B, Department of Philosophy at TXST, Polka-Works, Honors College at TXST, Lost River Film Fest, and The Price Center.
