Holiday events abound at San Marcos Public Library

Friday, December 13, 2019

The San Marcos Public Library is hosting a slew of Holiday-oriented events to help the community get into the spirit of the season.

A Night to Remember

A Night to Remember: Christmas Ornament Origami and Live Christmas Music will take place on Dec. 19 from 6-8 p.m.

Local artist Michael Hannon will be teaching participants how to create one-of-a-kind origami Christmas ornaments starting at 6 p.m.

“Michael Hannon is going to come in and teach people how to create beautiful ornaments by folding the paper in patterns as well as paper cutting techniques. It’s really a lesson in paper art,” Public Outreach Librarian Deborah Carter said.

All ages are welcome to participate in the origami ornament making, though younger children may need some parental assistance.

Starting at 7 p.m., brother and sister musical duo Laurie and Larry Jasinski will play some traditional and original Christmas tunes.

The library will provide all origami and paper crafting supplies as well as light refreshments for all who attend including hot cocoa, cinnamon spice tea and cookies.

Storytime with Sirena: A Mermaid Christmas

Storytime with Sirena: A Mermaid Christmas will take place on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Local storyteller Sirena, also known as Jessica Mejia, will lead children in a special bilingual storytime with songs.

Mejia has lived in San Marcos for 14 years and has enjoyed interactive storytelling with children for just as long. Though she can usually be found beside the San Marcos River in Rio Vista Park, she is making a special holiday appearance at the library this year.

Mejia dresses up as a mermaid in her storytimes, but not your average mermaid lounging about on dry land, she’s a “walking mermaid.”

“I dress up as a ‘walking mermaid,’ if you will, because I’m not in a fin and just sitting down,” Mejia said. “I go to the children and the kids get to dance with me and walk with me and talk…  I also remind them that a mermaid doesn’t have to have a fin, because a mermaid is someone that is friendly, that protects the river and that does their best in school.”

Mejia will also introduce attendees to different Latin-American holiday traditions and have professional musician Chris Castaneda perform “Feliz Navidad.”

There will be a holiday craft-making workshop during the program where attendees can make their own noise makers. This program is open to all ages.

Other Holiday Events

The library will also be hosting several performances of their holiday puppet show, “Too Much Noise at Santa’s House” on Dec. 17 and 19. Showings will be at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. both days.

Children ages 4-10 are invited to make a Christmas tree with recycled materials at the library’s Creation Station from 4-5 p.m. on Dec. 19. All supplies are provided by the library.
