After a year in design and development, Mary Kyle Hartson Park opened with a celebratory ribbon cutting.

The city welcomed guests to explore the park’s improvements, while commencing holiday cheer on Wednesday.

“As cities begin to grow in different directions, their historic downtowns are sometimes forgotten,” Councilmember Robert Rizo said. “But thanks to some special citizens, the chamber of commerce and our city council, we are not going to see that happen in the city of Kyle. We are going to revitalize our downtown. We’re going to bring more people to this area. We’re going to remember how important downtown is to us.”

Newly installed amenities include improved ADA access, a 20-footwide promenade, expanded seating areas, picnic tables, a playground and an educational rain garden. Improvements were funded by the 2019 settlement agreement between the City of Kyle and the Permian Highway Pipeline, LLC, and Kinder Morgan Texas Pipeline, LLC.

“As a long-time resident of Kyle, I’ve waited a while to see this area upgraded,” Rizo said. “Words cannot explain how happy I feel right now. This will not be the last major project coming to our downtown.”

The event also kicked off the city’s ‘Holidays in Kyle’ calendar events planned for each day of December. The Parks and Recreation Department will hold nightly holiday lights along with live music, vendors, photo opportunities and more at Mary Kyle Hartson Park.
