Local man tries to rob San Marcos Post Office

Friday, February 15, 2019

A 61-year-old local man who tried to rob the U.S. Post Office in San Marcos on Thursday remained behind bars the next day in lieu of a $75,000 bond.

Peter James Stoughton, who has no prior Hays County arrest record, reportedly displayed a note saying, “This is a robbery. Hand over the money” to a postal employee around 2 p.m., Commander Brandon Winkenwerder said in an email response to a Daily Record inquiry.

“A detailed description of the offender was provided and he was located at the intersection of Wonder World and Stagecoach by responding police units,” Winkenwerder wrote.

City policy does not allow the newspaper to speak directly to police except in rare instances. The newspaper is still waiting for answers to questions sent to City Hall about the rarity of an attempted robbery of a post office and whether the incident constituted a federal crime.
