Mistick Krewe plans city-wide 'Yardi Gras' competition

Sunday, January 24, 2021

For almost a decade, the Mistick Krewe of Okeanos Mardi Gras Parade has brought together residents, revelers, and local businesses in a fun-filled celebration of the community, neighborhoods, and the spirit of Mardi Gras. The annual parade traditionally features residents, locally owned businesses, talented musicians, and artists providing entertainment for the families of San Marcos.

However, the effects of the COVID-19 have greatly impacted the 2021 Krewe season, most notably its signature parade.

In lieu of our annual parade event, the Krewe is hosting a city-wide “Yardi Gras” competition. The event is sponsored by Century 21 Randall Morris & Associates. Residents are encouraged to show us their spirit and let the good times roll - from home.

Residents can register their entries via the Mistick Krewe of Okeanos website: (mistickkreweofokeanos.com). The community will then vote for their favorites on the Krewe’s official Facebook page. The Top Ten entries with the most reactions will receive a special gift from the Krewe of Okeanos and advance to the next round of official judging. First, second and third place entries will receive special prizes including a New Orleans King Cake. The first-place winner will ride in the 2022 San Marcos Mardi Gras Parade. Winners will be announced on Mardi Gras Day, Feb. 16.

The contest rules are simple. Do not cover/interfere with any fire safety equipment or walkways and keep everything - PG. Homes must be located within the City of San Marcos city limits and ETJ. Two board members and three local celebrities will conduct judging during the afternoons of Feb. 13 and Feb. 14. Judging will only include the portion of your yard/house that is visible from the driveway or street. Winners will be announced on our social media pages, website, and San Marcos Daily Record on Mardi Gras day, Feb. 16.

This year’s categories are as follows:

• Best YARD and/or HOUSE

• Best BUSINESS

Entries will be judged on:

• SPECIAL EFFECTS: Dazzle us with your special effects, including lights and mechanical effects to surprise and entertain everyone!

• CREATIVITY: Use your imagination - express yourself!

• SPIRIT: Show us a Mardi Gras-based theme that focuses on an overall sense of the Mardi Gras spirit!

Entry forms are available online on Mistick Krewe of Okeanos website (mistickkreweofokeanos.com). Select “Events”, then “Yardi Gras”. Cut-off date for entry is Feb. 12. For more information, please contact Diana Baker via e-mail at: kreweofokeanos@gmail.com
