The city of Kyle is accepting applications for several board and commission openings.

These include the Parks and Recreation Board, the Kyle Public Library Board, the Arts and Cultural Commission, the Civil Service Commission, the Economic Development and Tourism Board and the Kyle Area Youth Advisory Council.

This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in local government and make a difference in the community, officials stated. These positions offer a unique chance to shape the city’s future and residents are encouraged to take an interest in applying to serve the community.

Kyle Area Youth Advisory Council

The City of Kyle invites community members ranging in age from 14-18 to apply to be a part of the Kyle Area Youth Advisory Council.

KAYAC is a 16-member advisory committee comprised of Kyle area youth whose purpose is to provide a youthful point of view for the Kyle City Council on community affairs and issues. The committee is open to 9th-12th grade students who either reside in the city limits of Kyle or currently attend a high school in the Hays CISD School district or live in the city limits and are homeschooled.

Interested members, as well as their parents, are invited to attend a KAYAC informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. at Kyle City Hall’s Falcon Room, 100 W. Center St.

Parks and Recreation Board

The Parks and Recreation Board is now accepting applications for an open seat. Members of this board provide input and recommendations to the director on various aspects of the department including, but not limited to policy, rules, and regulations, facilities, playgrounds, and athletic fields, and recreational activities meant to benefit our community.

Individuals chosen to serve on this 7-member board will hold twoyear terms. Meetings are generally held on the last Monday of each month at Kyle City Hall or one of the parks. Members are appointed by the council and serve without compensation.

Kyle Public Library Board

The Kyle Public Library Board has an open position. Members of this 7-person board have several duties including advocating for adequate resources, participating in long and short-term strategic planning, and providing city council and the director with advice and recommendations on policies, rules, and regulations relating to the library.

Members of the Library Board typically meet on the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Kyle Public Library, 550 Scott St.

Economic Development and Tourism Board

The City of Kyle Economic Development and Tourism Board is looking to fill five vacant positions with residents who have a strong desire to support economic development & tourism in Kyle. Vacant seats on the board include a resident/ owner of a microbusiness, resident/ owner of a small business, resident/ executive-level representative of an enterprise or large business, all located within the city limits, and two resident positions.

The ED&T Board serves in an advisory capacity to Kyle City Council, focusing on business recruitment, retention, marketing, and tourism. The board’s goal is to properly prepare the city for future growth by promoting, assisting, and enhancing economic development and tourism activities in Kyle.

Members of this 7-person board serve one or two-year terms depending on the board seat. Arts & Cultural Commission

The Arts and Cultural Commission, which aims to bring Fine Arts to the Kyle community, is looking to fill three vacant positions. The Commission is made up of seven members who bring their creative energy and expertise to plan events and public displays that will encourage community members to enjoy the arts.

Additionally, the commission serves in an advisory capacity to City Council on all art-related matters, including arts activities and events. The commission meets each 3rd Thursday of the month at the Kyle Public Library.

Civil Service Commission

The three-person Civil Service Commission currently has an opening. This commission works together to create efficient police departments by ensuring police examinations, appointments, certifications and promotion eligibility are conducted properly.

The commission also oversees removals or suspensions of civil service employees as well as the appeals process for those decisions. Civil Service Commission members must be free of political influence, are interested in public service, and must not have held public office in the previous three years.

Members are appointed by the city manager and confirmed by city council.

The Civil Service Commission meets on an as-needed basis, there is no set schedule like the majority of boards and commissions in the City of Kyle. To apply and learn more, visit cityofkyle.com/bc.
