San Marcos bank robber convicted in federal court

A federal jury convicted an Austin-area man, who committed five armed-robberies, including one in San Marcos. 

Rodney Glenn Green, 59, robbed the Bank of America in San Marcos, 308 E. Hopkins St., where he stole approximately $10,841 on April 28, 2018. Green was convicted of five counts of bank robbery, five counts of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence and one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. 

“I am pleased that an Austin jury (Wednesday) returned a verdict of guilty on all counts against a man who committed multiple armed bank robberies in our community,” U.S. Attorney John F. Bash said in a statement. “Our federal prosecutors and agents are working hard to keep our cities safe and to protect our financial system.”

Evidence presented during trial showed that Green committed the following armed bank robberies: 

• Jan. 24, 2018 – Chase Bank in Austin – Green stole approximately $4,000.
• Feb. 8, 2018 – BBVA Compass Bank in Austin – Green stole approximately $3,337.
• Feb. 24, 2018 – BBVA Compass Bank in Austin – Green stole approximately $11,939.
• April 7, 2018 – BB&T Bank in Austin – Green stole approximately $5,495.
• April 28, 2018 – Bank of America in San Marcos – Green stole approximately $10,841.

Additionally, trial evidence revealed that he committed all five of the robberies in a similar fashion. Green wore gloves, a mask and a black-hooded sweatshirt or jacket and brandished a small semi-automatic handgun while demanding money from bank tellers. 

Green was apprehended on April 29, 2018 by federal agents and police officers. His hotel room in north Austin, vehicle and storage unit were searched, where currency was found still wrapped in bank straps. Law enforcement found distinctive items in Green’s possession that were visible on surveillance images during the robberies, including a small semi-automatic handgun, black-hooded sweatshirt and a pair of gloves that were stained pink by a dye pack that was among the bills he stole.

The bank robbery crimes Green was convicted on carry a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison. Brandishing a firearm during a crime carries a minimum sentence of 7 years in federal prison. The felon in possession carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison. 

Green is in federal custody. A date for sentencing has not been set. The FBI, Central Texas Violent Crimes Task Force; U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Austin Police Department and San Marcos Police Department investigated Green’s case.
