SMarts Awards presentation to take place Thursday

Monday, October 24, 2022

The City of San Marcos is inviting the public to the 10th annual SMarts Advocacy Awards.

The San Marcos Arts Commission will present the awards on Thursday in observance of National Arts and Humanities Month. Awards will be presented to individuals and organizations who are making significant contributions to the San Marcos arts and cultural scene.

The city said this year’s honorees are:

  • Margaret Adie: practicing artist, founding member of 218 Co-Op Gallery, and member of the Price Center Arts Committee.
  • Chris Cooper: long-time art educator recently retired as Arts Coordinator for San Marcos High School.
  • Broke Thespians (Spark Award): up-and-coming local theatre troupe.

Thursday’s event marks the 10th time the San Marcos Arts Commission has presented SMarts Advocacy Awards as part of its ongoing efforts to elevate, incubate and expand arts and cultural initiatives in San Marcos.

The city said the purpose of the San Marcos Arts (SMarts) Award program is to “encourage and recognize outstanding support and enhancement of the arts and cultural life of San Marcos; to recognize the important contributions of artists and arts organizations to the quality of life and economic vitality of the community; and to encourage volunteerism and business participation with local arts organizations.”

The event takes place from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Price Center, 222 W. San Antonio St., and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Awards will be presented at 6:30 p.m.
