TXST honors 7 Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation recipients

Texas State University recognized seven scholarship recipients at the football game against Georgia Southern, in promotion of the annual Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Houston Awards Dinner on Nov. 15. This year, the foundation will be honoring Bill Hobson, former Senior Vice President at UBS Wealth Management & current farmer/ rancher with the Semper Fidelis Award. This year’s Military Guest of Honor is Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele USMC (Ret.).

Seven scholarship recipients were recognized at the game and two of those recipients are available for interviews. Daughter of veteran Sergeant Douglas A. Gascon USMC, Regan Gascon, class of 2023, is an early childhood education major from Belton, Texas, who aspires to earn her master’s degrees in early childhood psychology and secondary school academics from Texas State to become a teacher or school counselor. Daughter of Hospital Corpsman Second Class Anthony O. Semprun USN (Ret.), Julianna Semprun, class of 2024, is an aquatic biology major with hopes of working in conservation and research.

Lieutenant General Martin R. Steele USMC (Ret.). enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1965, rising from private to three-star general. He retired in 1999 after a 34year military career that included combat service in Vietnam and Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Following his military retirement, he became the president and CEO of the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, the world’s largest naval museum, in New York City. Under his leadership, the museum adopted the mission “Honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth about the price of freedom.” He continues to serve as a trustee emeritus.
