Edelmiro Ybarra Rincon

Edelmiro Ybarra Rincon of San Marcos, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 10th, 2021. He was 93 years old.

Edelmiro, known as “Eddie” to family and close friends, was born in Mercedes, Texas on January 3rd, 1928, the 3rd of 12 siblings. He graduated from McAllen High School and pursued higher education, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Texas State University [formerly, Southwest Texas State University].

Eddie joined the military in 1945, serving his country as an Information Specialist in the Army Air Force from April 1946 till January 1949. Following military service, Eddie returned to civilian life in the Texas Valley region, working for several news agencies and local newspaper companies as a linotype operator, writer and journalist. While there, he met and married another Valley professional, an elementary school teacher named Janie Perez. Eddie and Janie were married on June 22nd, 1952 in Janie’s Central Texas home town, Melvin. They were married for 62 years.

Eddie and Janie had three children. Following the birth of their third child, Edwin, Eddie relocated his family from McAllen, to Corpus Christi and, finally, San Marcos. His record of community service broadened as he worked as an editorial columnist for his local newspaper outlet, The San Marcos Daily Record. He worked linotype machines in the press room and wrote articles in both English and Spanish, serving two communities. He was a civil servant for the City of San Marcos, taught at Southwest Texas State University, was a deacon at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. For pleasure, Eddie enjoyed flying as a private pilot, and expanded those interests achieving multi-engine, IFR and instructor certifications.

Eddie is survived by his children: Beverly Ann Frimpong, Cynthia Marie Gonzalez, and Edwin Rincon; grandsons: Michael

Gonzalez, Jonathan Gonzalez, Kevin Frimpong and Joshua Rincon.

A private ceremony will be conducted with immediate family only due to mandated Covid-19 health restrictions. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of cards or flowers, the family has requested donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and Cure, or the American Diabetes Foundation.
